If you have never been to the Magical Kenya Travel Expo, here is what people who have been coming for years always say about the first time: they wish they had planned it better, they ran out of business cards, they nearly missed the session that turned out to be the most valuable hour of the three days, and they booked to come back before they had even left the venue.

MKTE 2026 is the 16th edition and will be held at the iconic home of Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi. The event runs October 6, 7 and 8. Three days. 400+ exhibitors. 160+ vetted international buyers. 10,000+ expected attendees. Conference sessions on AI, digital transformation, investment, creative economy and tourism resilience. An evening cocktail where more business gets done informally than in most formal meetings. This guide tells you exactly how to navigate all of it from scratch.

The lodges that are fully booked in January spent October at MKTE. The tour operators landing European wholesale contracts exhibited at MKTE. The first-timers who showed up without a plan still left with something they could not have found anywhere else.

Step One: Register Before You Do Anything Else

Registration is the first and most important step. Everything else follows from it.

Trade Visitor registration takes approximately four minutes. There is no cheaper way to spend three days in Kenyan tourism than as a registered Trade Visitor at MKTE.

Trade Visitor Full floor access, conference sessions, evening cocktail. Register at www.mkte.co.ke/visitors
Exhibitor Your own stand on the exhibition floor. Direct access to the buyer matchmaking system. Apply at www.mkte.co.ke/exhibitors
Media Full floor access plus media centre, press conference access, speaker interviews. Accreditation at www.mkte.co.ke/media
Sponsor / Partner Custom engagement package. Contact: contactus@mkte26.co.ke

Register now. The event is less than two weeks away and while Trade Visitor registration remains open, last-minute registration means you miss any pre-event communications, the digital delegate pack, and the heads-up on which sessions are filling fastest.

What to Expect on Each Day

Each of the three days at MKTE has a different character. Understanding this helps you plan your time rather than spending all three days doing the same thing.

Tuesday 6 October
Opening day. The energy is highest. The opening ceremony sets the tone. This is the day to walk the full exhibition floor before it gets busy, identify the exhibitors or buyers you want to return to, and attend the AI and data governance seminar. The Day 1 cocktail evening is the single best networking moment of the entire expo do not leave early.
Wednesday 7 October The B2B floor is at full intensity. If you are an exhibitor, your pre-scheduled buyer meetings are running today. If you are a Trade Visitor, this is the day to have the deeper conversations with the exhibitors and buyers you identified on Day 1. Slow down, go back to the stands that interested you, and have the conversations you came for.
Thursday 8 October Conference day and the Creator Summit. The digital transformation and tourism resilience seminars run today. The Creative Economy session in the afternoon is the milestone conversation of the edition. This is the day to be in the sessions rather than on the floor. Use the morning for any remaining floor conversations, then commit the afternoon to the seminar programme.

Practical Things That First-Timers Always Wish They Had Known

✓ Bring more business cards than you think you need. Three days at MKTE with 10,000 attendees will exhaust a standard stack by lunchtime on Day 1. 100 cards minimum.

✓ Download the event app or save the floor plan before you arrive. Navigating 400+ stands without a map costs time you will want for conversations.

✓ Wear comfortable shoes. The exhibition floor at Uhuru Gardens covers significant ground. Heels on grass do not serve anyone well.

✓ Arrive early on Day 1. The opening ceremony draws a crowd. Getting onto the floor in the first hour, before the peak, means better access to exhibitors who are less busy and more available to talk.

✓ Block the Day 1 cocktail in your diary as non-negotiable. The informal networking at the cocktail produces more genuine connections than any structured session. Show up, introduce yourself, and stay.

✓ Attend at least one seminar session you would not normally prioritise. The AI session is the one this year that will change how you think about your marketing strategy regardless of what you do in the sector.

✓ Follow up within 24 hours of any meaningful conversation. The value of a trade show contact decays fast. A message sent that evening or the following morning is worth ten times a message sent a week later.

✓ Carry water. October in Nairobi is warm, and Uhuru Gardens is a large outdoor venue. Staying hydrated sounds trivial until it isn’t.

The Most Important Thing to Know as a First-Timer

MKTE is not a spectator event. The people who leave with the most are the ones who introduce themselves unprompted, who walk up to a stand they find interesting and ask a direct question, who join the queue to speak to a panelist after a session, who sit at a table of strangers at the cocktail and start a conversation. The expo does not deliver value passively. You extract it by showing up and engaging.

You are arriving at the 16th edition at Uhuru Gardens. The people around you include buyers with purchasing mandates, lodge owners with extraordinary products, destination marketing experts with networks built over a decade, policymakers shaping the sector’s next phase, and innovators building the technology that will determine how tourism is sold and discovered in Africa for the next ten years. None of that knowledge is locked up. It is walking the same floor you are.

Go and find it.
